The Csound Intensive
Workshop

During the week of July 12, 1999 Michael Rhoades was in beautiful Crested Butte Colorado for an Intensive Csound Workshop put on by C.E.M.I. (The Center for Experimental Music and Intermedia) of the University of Northern Texas. Dr. Jon Christopher Nelson led the workshop. His knowledge of digital synthesis techniques and their implementation in Csound was amazing. A huge amount of information was disseminated in a very logical, methodical manner making aspects of the programming language that were before cryptic at best, now easy to understand and implement in composition. If you ever have a chance to attend this workshop in the future and have a real need to understand Csound, make it to Crested Butte, it is very worthwhile.
The other workshop attendees were great people and were each advanced composers of electronic and experimental music making for very interesting and varied conversation. The exchange of ideas and compositional attitudes was amazing. Although everyone did not necessarily agree on style or approach, space was allowed for everyone to express themselves and apply Csound in their own original way.
On Friday evening there was a concert of music composed by many of the workshop participants. The title of the concert was "Music You Have Never Heard Before." It was attended and well received by a good sized audience of local residents and UNT faculty and students. Michael Rhoades' Csound composition "Energies at Work" was one of the pieces played. The overall situation combined with the incredible beauty of the setting made for a very creatively stimulating week.
